Library Focus: Learn computer basics and more

— Snow aficionados might object, but for many Central New Yorkers this is the season for indoor sports and the library has plenty to offer from recently released DVDs, book and magazines to fun and useful programs for all ages. Stop in soon and sample some of what we have to offer.

Tax help starts here

Seniors and others with reduced incomes are invited to call 635-5631 and sign up for tax preparation help with volunteers from AARP. Appointments are available Tuesday and Wednesday mornings but hurry; Feb. is already heavily booked.

Census gold

Join Louise Creighton for Using Census Records to Find Your Ancestors at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8. Registration is required.

Daytime computer basics

Classes are held at 1:30 p.m., hands on and limited to 10 participants so be sure to call in and register. This month’s offerings include: Organize Your Computer Files – stop losing important information (Feb. 8); Basic Excel Spreadsheets (Feb. 15); Web Basics (Feb. 22) and Troubleshooting (Feb. 29).

Evening computer classes!

On Tuesday nights we’ll offer some of our basics for newbies starting at 7 p.m. Classes are hands on and limited to 10 participants so be sure to call in and register. Evaluating Websites (Feb. 14) and Ebooks (Feb. 21), suitable for deciding which reader works for you or bring your device and we’ll help you troubleshoot any problems you’ve been having.

Beyond the basics computer skills

Basic Graphics Editing with Irfanview held at 7 p.m. Feb. 9; Displaying, and Sharing Photos at 7 p.m. Feb. 16; or add some education to your afternoon with our Friday offerings: Editing and Displaying Graphics (1:30 p.m. Feb. 10) and Finding Open Source Books and Music (1:30 p.m. Feb. 17).

High touch

Move from high tech to high touch with our craft groups and classes some free, some fee-based, all priceless. Pulling Threads meets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, to work on personal sewing projects. In Stitches meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22. Prefer paper to fabric? Sign up for Card Making with Rubber Stamps at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, to make greeting cards and other rubber stamping projects with local artisan Missy Shipman. Registration and a $15 materials fee are required for this session. Weave a birdhouse basket at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18. There is a $20 materials fee for this project and $5 goes to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. For the finale wrap up your life in pretty paper with a Scrapbooking Session with Missy Shipman at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23. There is a $20 materials fee for this month’s project and registration is required.
