SYRACUSE Patricia Thomas-Becker, 75, a resident of Menorah Park’s Jewish Health and Rehabilitation, will become a bat mitzvah. Patricia was inspired by her grandchildren, Caroline and Jonathan Kahn.
“My grandchildren are now in college, but I felt this was important for me,” she said. “It was something left undone in my life.”
Despite some physical limitations, Patricia has been studying and preparing for several months for this lifecycle event, working with the Menorah Park’s Cantor Marvin Moskowitz to prepare herself to read prayers and lead the congregation in worship. Perhaps motivated by her musical tutor, she especially likes the words she will read from Ecclesiastics, “there is no singing without God.”
Every bat mitzvah girl gets a party, and Patricia is no exception. A celebration will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Menorah Park following the worship service, but this is not the usual dance-and-party game event. Since the bat mitzvah was scheduled for the Jewish holiday of Tub’Shevat, or the New Year for Trees, Patricia has planned a Tub’ Shevat seder, which is modeled after a Passover Seder.
The celebration cake, fittingly, will be inscribed with the Hebrew words l’dorv’dor, translated as from “generation to generation.”
Excitement is building on campus, as no one can remember a bat mitzvah ever taking place here before. The Menorah Park community is looking forward to sharing this special day with Patricia. This is a community event and all are welcome to attend. Patricia is looking forward to a large intergenerational celebration as she feels this is an opportunity for everyone, both young and old to learn and grow.
“The Jewish Home is all about life,” said Mary Ellen Bloodgood, CEO of Menorah Park. “Our staff, families and residents are all engaged in continuing life’s journey and we are thrilled to celebrate this Jewish life cycle moment with Patricia.”
