COLUMN: Volunteer Connections - Submit nominations for 2012 Volunteers of the Year

— Christmas is the perfect time to begin thinking about those special people who have given the gift of their time, talent and energy by nominating them for the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year award for 2012. Every year a man and woman are chosen to be recognized for this special award; do you know someone who should be nominated? Please download the nomination form on our website at bvillevolunteers.org on the “Awards” page or stop by the Volunteer Center between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays to pick up a nomination form. Nominations must be received by Jan. 31, 2013. For more information, please call 638-0251.

The number of senior citizens who are in need of transportation to medical appointments and other essential errands is increasing and volunteer drivers are needed more than ever. Depending on your schedule, you can drive as little or as much as you want. Please call B’ville Express coordinator Ellen Stevens at 638-0097 to find out how to become a volunteer driver.

Do you enjoy watching the round the clock programming on B’ville’s own Public Access TV on Time Warner channel 98 or Verizon FIOS channel 30? PAC-B is operated and maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers and they need more. If the challenge of producing, editing and videotaping sounds like just the right fit for you, please call 638-2768 for more information; and don’t worry, training is provided.

There is always a lot going on at Beaver Lake Nature Center. Volunteers staff the front desk and the gift shop, serve as trail guides, help with mailings and act as craft table assistants. Upcoming seasonal opportunities include: snowshoe rentals on weekends; teaching visitors on a tour of the maple sugar bush about the sugaring process (advance training is required for this) in March; helping out serving and bussing tables at their pancake breakfasts every Saturday during March; the snack bar will be open during the winter inside the center and volunteers 18 and older are needed to sell food and beverages, especially on weekends. For more information about volunteering at Beaver Lake Nature Center, please call Margaret Tzen at 638-2519.
