COLUMN: Craft breweries, tourism and agriculture assisted by new law

— These new laws also have a built-in, locally-grown ingredients component. By 2018, at least 20 percent of the hops and 20 percent of all other ingredients must be grown or produced in NYS. After 2024, no less than 90 percent of the hops and 90 percent of all other ingredients must be grown or produced in NYS. Beer manufactured under these guidelines would be designated as New York State Labeled beer. This will go a long way toward creating a distinctive flavor as well for all New York State labeled beer. This will also encourage more agriculture in the state.

I sincerely hope what transpired last session for the craft breweries is a trend our state can continue moving forward with into our next legislative session. I look forward to working with industry to see that our whole economy can benefit from similar legislative changes.
