COLUMN: Escape the heat and do some book browsing

— Storytime is on hiatus and the “official” summer reading programs for kids and teens have ended but there is still plenty of reading left in the season. Come on in and take a look at the crop of new books or browse the stacks for a forgotten classic. Find a shady nook and fuel your mind while you beat the heat.

Wired Wednesday

Learn or brush up on computer basics with our Wired Wednesday series. These held on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. and are designed to teach the basics in a friendly, hands-on environment. This month’s slate continues Aug. 15 with what the library can offer you free through your computer or ours; on Aug. 22 start getting your memories in order with a class on sorting your photos. Last but not least, learn how to edit your photos to get the best images yet Aug. 29.

August open mike

Our minstrels have wandered far and wide this summer so who knows what they will bring to our long running family friendly entertainment. Join us at 7 p.m. Aug. 15 and discover the enchantment of live entertainment as a spectator or a participant. Signup begins at 6:30 p.m. and if the technology is willing, the show starts at 7 p.m.

Otaku summer

Summer is nearly over; time for the our anime fans to come back to the joys of dim, air-conditioned rooms full of colorful characters and fantastic plots with a side of ramen of course. The show begins at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16.

Yu-Gi-Oh

Come trade and play at the last of our Thursday sessions at 6 p.m. Aug. 16. Yu-Gi-Oh will move to Tuesday nights this fall, so keep an eye on the calendar.

Workplace skills

Upgrade your job skills for free with our job-centered computer courses held at 7 p.m. Thursday evenings. PC Troubleshooting is a skill everyone can use; start to learn the basics Aug. 23. Finally Google may put the world at your fingertips but we can help you make some sense of your search results with Beyond Google Aug. 30.
