COLUMN: Sample the riches at your local library

— Summer is speeding by but there is still time to make the most of the season here at your library. Our summer reading programs (for all ages) still have a few more weeks to run, along with drop in summer storytimes and craft programs. We also have lots of our regular entertainment and education programs running full tilt along with our usual raft of books, music, films and more. So, stop in soon and sample the riches we have in store.

Pull Threads not hair

Get away from the house and the heat for the morning and put your time to good use finishing long delayed projects. Whether you quilt, embroider, knit or crochet, we have a clean, well-lighted room and pleasant folks to keep you company as you escape your worries and pursue your craft.

Drop in fun

Just two more weeks of story fun before we go on hiatus again until September, so check in soon for your storytime booster shot. Preschoolers meet at 1:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. Aug. 1 and Aug. 8. At 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, kids are welcome to join us making Chinese lanterns. We will finish our summer craft sessions on Aug. 9 with a chance to make star charts or planispheres. Our youngest patrons can round out their storytime season the following week with a 10 a.m. session for one and 2 year olds on Aug. 6, a read and play for 6 month to 24 month olds at 10 a.m. on Aug. 7 and an 11:15 a.m. the same day for older toddlers.

Wired Wednesday

Learn or brush up on computer basics with our Wired Wednesday series. These sessions are held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and are designed to teach the basics in a friendly hands on environment. This month’s slate starts with Email basics on Aug. 1. On Aug. 8 you can learn how to keep in touch long distance with Skype; on Aug. 15, be prepared to be astonished by what the library can offer you free through your computer or ours; and on Aug. 22, start getting your memories in order with a class on sorting your photos. Last but not least, learn how to edit your photos to get the best images yet on Aug. 29.
