B’ville youth takes first place in WCNY contest

Baldwinsville’s Ella Joy Smith placed first in WCNY-TV/FM’s annual Treehouse Tales Young Writers & Illustrators Contest with this pictured entry titled “Leo Solved the Riddle.”

— Ella Joy Smith has been named a first place winner in the WCNY-TV/FM’s annual Treehouse Tales Young Writers & Illustrators Contest. A fourth grade student residing in Baldwinsville, Smith’s entry was titled “Leo Solves the Riddle.”

Open to students from first through fourth grade, the contest promotes literacy and creative expression by asking children to write and illustrate their own stories. Students from WCNY’s 19-county viewing area were eligible for the contest, and WCNY’s judging team reviewed more than 125 entries.

Smith and other winners read from their entries at the contest’s award ceremony on April 11 at Liverpool Library during National Library Week.

“As Central New York’s public broadcasting station, it is our mission to promote the literacy skills that will turn today’s children into tomorrow’s leaders,” said WCNY President and CEO Robert J. Daino. “We congratulate all of the children who entered the contest and thank them for sharing their creativity with us.”
