Making your tax bills easier to understand

— Despite the financial burden placed on the county by state-mandated programs, Onondaga County has been able to maintain a fiscally sound footing with a balanced budget and annual declines in operational costs. Our ability to control spending has allowed us to lower the amount of the state-mandated costs we pass on to taxpayers, but the rapid growth of state-mandated costs will eventually force steep increases in taxes unless New York state can exercise fiscal restraint and reduce the costs of these programs.

The resolution that I recently co-sponsored will remove the “State-Mandated Costs” line from future tax bills and replace it with a “County Tax” line. There will also be a note on your tax bill next year explaining how much of the “County Tax” line is being spent on state-mandated programs. My hope is that the confusion surrounding state-mandated programs is eliminated and taxpayers can clearly see how their tax dollars are being spent.
