Skaneateles Press editor wins state and regional journalism awards

The Skaneateles Press and its editor Jason Emerson have recently won awards in both state and regional journalism competitions.

At the New York Press Association 2011 Better Newspaper Contest award ceremony on Saturday, March 31, at Saratoga Springs, Emerson and the Skaneateles Press won third place for editorial writing.

NYPA has been hosting statewide awards since 1930. The contest is designed to measure papers of similar size against one another in categories such as news, photography, and advertising. Approximately 4,000 entries are received each year.

The 2011 contest entries were judged in Seattle by members of the Washington Press Association.

Emerson also recently won a first place award in the 2011 Syracuse Press Club Professional Recognition Awards Contest.

Emerson received the Robert Haggart Award for Best Column for his piece, “Some of us need to remember: Football is only a game,” published in the Oct. 12 issue of the Skaneateles Press.

Emerson will receive his SPC award at the club’s May 5 awards ceremony in Syracuse.
