Staying busy during the holiday break, the CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt wrestling team made its way to SUNY-Oswego to compete in last weekend’s Kenneth Haines Memorial Tournament. Of the 10 teams entered, CBA/J-D found itself in third place at meet’s end, having picked up 170 points to edge out Mexico, who had 165 points. Fairport, with 288 points, took the top spot as Fulton (190 points) earned the second spot. Four times, CBA/J-D wrestlers made the finals, but none of them was able to win. Ben Honis got the closest, reaching the 195-pound title match and battling hard against Colton Kells (Fairport), who prevailed in a 9-5 decision. This was just before Zach Shapiro appeared in the 220-pound final, where Fulton’s Derek Owen would beat him 8-2. Mark Friske, at 170 pounds, never got to the full six minutes, beaten 17-1 by Mexico’s Jacob Woolson in a technical fall as J.T. Romagnoli, in the 145-pound title match, got pinned in 32 seconds by Woolson’s Mexico teammate, C.J. Loomis. Two other times, though, CBA/J-D did snare third-place finishes. Matt Lauro lost a narrow 132-pound semifinal to Fulton’s Brandon Hill 6-5, but recovered to edge Dylan Hitchcock (Fairport) 3-2 in the consolation bracket final. Kaalar Wynn had an unusual third-place finish at 182 pounds, in that he had to beat his own teammate, George Kassis, 14-5 for that spot after both of them lost in the semifinals. Cole Murphy, at 113 pounds, took fourth place, while Arsen Bagiryan did the same at 120 pounds. CBA/J-D goes head-to-head with Fulton on Thursday before heading to Canastota for the Richard New Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
