In a busy and exciting week, the Marcellus girls tennis team played three times, twice getting beat by highly-talented opponents. The Mustangs went up against Cazenovia last Monday and picked off a couple of matches, but still took a 5-2 defeat to the Lakers. Both points came in doubles, where Grace Hunt and Mary Kate McHale worked past Grace Gara and Taylor Mimms 6-3, 7-6. Emily Hennigan and Renee Poullott put together a 6-4, 6-4 sweep over Edie Connor and Sally Langan. Only once did the Mustangs get close in singles, as Holly Grosholz took Sienna Lints to three sets before falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Haley Randall and Audrey Cerrone both lost in two sets, while in doubles Tierney Clark and Ricky Maxon stayed close in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat to Ava Gurney and Natalie Roszel. From there, the Mustangs went on to rout Jordan-Elbridge 7-0 on Thursday afternoon. In two contested singles matches, Randall beat Morgan Conroy 6-1, 6-0, while Grosholz managed a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Emma Stanton. In the four doubles matches, the teams of Hennigan-Poullott, Hunt-McHale, Alexandra Burrows-Telsea Fey and Genevieve Rao-Katherine White lost just two total games in eight sets of play. This intense week culminated on Friday with a close battle against one of the Mustangs’ biggest rivals, Skaneateles, and though Marcellus got close, it still took a 4-3 loss to that other group of Lakers. Randall, in first singles, came from behind to beat Makenzi Herbst 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, but Grosholz and Cerrone both lost in straight sets, leaving it up to the doubles sides. Marcellus could only manage a split, though. Hunt and McHale handled Liz Belinski and Angela Krouse 7-5, 6-2, while Clark and Megan Charles got past Maura McNeil and Maddy Pinkney 6-2, 7-6. Hennigan and Poullott fell to Grace and Kathryn Magee 7-5, 6-2. By stark contrast, West Genesee got a mid-season breather before CNY Counties League play resumed. And when it did on Thursday afternoon, the Wildcats handled it well, sweeping all four doubles matches in a 6-1 victory over the Oswego Buccaneers. Samantha Heyn and Marisa Joyce set the tone, ripping past Meredith Chesare and Sarah Mancuso 6-1, 6-1. Taylor Ginestro and Caitlin Hawley gained a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Rana Al-Salameh and Krysta Broeker. Theresa Clark and Kayla Llanos continued the trend, beating Emilee Anderson and Samantha Davis 6-1, 6-2, while Mary Frontale and Alyssa Indelicato had a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Allison Moshier and Kennedy Singletary. Moving to singles, Jessie Brill lost to Katie Knopp 7-5, 6-0, but Nicole Baz dominated Molly Malone 6-1, 6-1, and Rachel Gillett had a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Kelly Skinner. Westhill took 7-0 defeat to Skaneateles last Monday afternoon, just as Marcellus was falling to Cazenovia. Adrianna Carello started out well in her singles match against Olivia Gage, but still lost 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. The Lakers won every other match in straight sets. Neither Katie Ferrara nor Eileen Fleming won more than three games in any of their sets in singles play, while in doubles Phoebe Langdon and Bridget Sherlock were close for a while, but still fell to the Magee sisters 7-5, 6-2.
