Though it went 13-5 a season ago, the Westhill boys soccer team still felt unfulfilled after Clinton, who eventually went to the state final four, knocked them out in the Section III Class B semifinals. Ever since, the Warriors had worked hard in getting set for 2012, a campaign that includes home games on the school’s new artificial turf field, starting with Tuesday night’s visit from Solvay. Before that, though, there’s a pair of season-opening road games. Westhill went to Phoenix last Tuesday afternoon and, ignoring the rain, unleashed a strong attack in an 8-1 rout of the Firebirds. Having worked its way to a 5-1 edge by halftime, the Warriors were relentless, not stopping until Luke Longo had picked up a three-goal hat trick and Connor Powell contributed two goals and one assist. In support, Jared Ristoff, Jack Taber and Tom Kinsella also scored, with Matt Torak joining Kinsella in the assist column. It was expected to be tougher in Friday night’s game at Skaneateles – and it was, the Warriors scoring early and hanging on from there to edge the Lakers 1-0. Though not as formidable as the side that won a state Class B title in 2010, Skaneateles is still a dangerous foe. But it also had played just once so far, and had seen that game at Marcellus (where it led 1-0 in the first half) halted by lightning and not resumed. This time around, the Warriors got the first-half goal, from Jackson Haber. Erik Pola, the Lakers’ goalie, stopped everything else on his way to 11 saves, but Skaneateles could not break through and tie it, despite many chances the rest of the way. Westhill goalie Chris Burrows managed seven saves. Due to that weather stoppage in its game with Skaneateles, Marcellus was still looking for its first win when Jordan-Elbridge showed up Thursday night. And after waiting out the girls game against Westhill (which required one lightning delay and two overtimes), the Mustangs did not show any rust, putting up lots of offense in an 8-2 win over the Eagles. Leading 5-1 at halftime, Marcellus kept finding the net. Tom McNaney and Mike McNaney both scored twice, while Nate Waite, Evan Turner and Mark Tompkins each got one goal and one assist. Eric Daggett earned a pair of assists as Craig Dorio got the other goal and Tom Malloy joined Tom McNaney with single assists. J-E began its season on Aug. 31 with a 7-0 defeat to Chittenango, a newcomer to the OHSL Liberty division. Kali Kimak made 21 saves, but the Bears proved too powerful as Lauren Billington and Kayla Bain both scored twice. A 6-0 defeat to Bishop Grimes followed. The boys Eagles opened last Tuesday with a 5-2 defeat to Cazenovia, unable to overcome the Lakers’ 3-0 first-half surge despite late goals from Nick Falcone and Ian Bailey. Conner Polsin led the visitors, scoring twice. As for the J-E girls, its early struggles continued Thursday with a 5-1 defeat to Skaneateles.
