Bigger goals remain for the Cicero-North Syracuse boys indoor track and field team, but at least the first bit of post-season honors are squared away. The Northstars were in full command of Wednesday’s CNY Counties League National division meet at SRC Arena, where it picked up 194 points, nearly double the total of Liverpool, who was second with 101 points. Zavon Watkins, who is heading to Penn State, got disqualified in the 600-meter run. But Watkins did win the 300-meter dash in 36.91 seconds, where C-NS’s Shawn Webb and Mark Broughton were third and fourth, respectively. And in the 1,000-meter run, Watkins finished in 2:37.62, far ahead of the field, as the Northstars’ Ken Ryan got fourth place. C-NS built its big margin by having four 1-2 sweeps in five field events. That included the pole vault, where Mike Hyde cleared 13 feet 6 inches and Cameron Shaughnessy (11 feet 6 inches) was right behind. Joel Brousseau won the high jump by clearing 5 feet 10 inches, with Bryson Mayes (5 feet 8 inches) in second place. But Mayes would claim the triple jump by going 39 feet 5 inches, just ahead of Morgan Austen (38 feet 6 ½ inches) in second. Austin George, with a shot put toss of 42 feet 5 ½ inches, beat teammate Joe Castaldo (41 feet 4 ½ inches) for the title, with Liverpool’s Anthony Miller (40 feet 9 ¾ inches) in third. But the Warriors retaliated in the long jump, where Mark VanMarter won by going 19 feet 5 ½ inches, ahead of Mayes in second (18 feet 9 ¼ inches) and Avery Yarn (18 feet 7 ¾ inches) in third. On the oval, C-NS won two of the three relays. Yarn, Webb, Nick Mezatesta and Shayne Mitchell won a close 4×400, finishing in 3:36.32, as Liverpool’s quartet of Keewan Rondinello, Mike Schneider, Ryheim Lawes and Jeff Conley was second in 3:36.85. In the 4×800, Neil Gill, Ken Ryan, Anthony Lupia and Paul DeGennaro prevailed in 8:44.38, where Liverpool was third in 9:01.65. That followed Lupia, in 4:34.85, and Gill, in 4:35.41, going 1-2 in the mile, and in the 3,200-meter run Lupia finished second in 10:19.01 and Gill was third, ahead of the Warriors’ tandem of Anthony Ostuni and Adam Zinger. Liverpool rebounded in the 4×200, where Rondinello, Lawes, Ryan Ronk and Steve Fiorello got the victory in 1:34.66, keeping C-NS second in 1:35.13. Individually, C-NS’s Frank Volino earned first place in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.10 seconds, with Austen third (8.72) and Liverpool’s Mike Schneider (8.66 seconds) between them in second place. Broughton was second in the 55-meter dash in 6.88 seconds, with Keenan Miller third (6.89 seconds), as Rondinello finished fourth and Fiorello fifth.
