For the most part, the CBA/J-D ice hockey team got some rest during the holiday break, getting recharged for what promises to be a tight race for the Division II regular-season title. Only once did the Brothers take the ice, in a non-league game against Clarence (Section VI) last Tuesday at Onondaga Nation Arena, which ended in a 2-2 tie. The Red Devils, hailing from the Buffalo suburbs, shut CBA/J-D down for much of the game and took a 1-0 lead to the third period. Once there, though, the Brothers roared back, using goals by Scott Firman and Taylor Furst to pull even. It would stay tied through the OT period, as Hunter Andersen had a superb effort in the net, turning back 36 of Clarence’s 38 shots. Joe Burns, Lucas Relkin and Dominick Scicchitano each earned one assist. Now the Brothers (5-4-2) got a 10-day break, only practicing before a key game Friday against Cazenovia at Morrisville State IcePlex. CBA/J-D won their first meet 4-1 in Nedrow on Nov. 30. Meanwhile, Fayetteville-Manlius went to the Cortland-Homer Tournament, meeting the host Golden Eagles in Thursday’s opening round and dominating from start to finish in a 6-0 shutout. Scoring in each period (three times in the third), the Hornets were relentless, especially Anthony Angello, whose hot start continued as he earned a three-goal hat trick and added a pair of assists. Trevor Chase was tough to stop, too, as he scored twice and added a pair of assists. Ryan Amidon also had two assists as Alex Ferrara got the other goal, with Ryan Daly and Tim Maalouf picking up one assist apiece. In Friday’s final, F-M met Frontier (Section VI), from the Buffalo area, who had beaten Cazenovia 5-3 in the other part of the opening round. Here, the Hornets were on the wrong end of a one-sided result, falling to the Falcons 11-3 despite two more goals from Angello, who also assisted on Maloouf’s tally. At 6-3 on the season (2-2 league), F-M is back on ‘home’ ice at the Cicero Twin Rinks this week for games against Central Square and Baldwinsville.
