The cross country teams from Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse-Minoa got together Wednesday for a large meet featuring two others from the OHSL Freedom division, Chittenango and Cortland.
And the boys Spartans beat the Red Rams 20-35 behind a sweep of the top four spots. Mike Coogan won in 15 minutes, 41 seconds, with Joe Coogan second in 16:30. Jesse Perrone took third place in 16:43 and Louis Ferrone was fourth in 16:49.
J-D had to compensate by claiming the next five spots, starting with Will Hohreiter’s fifth-place time of 16:54. Nick Harron was sixth, in 17:09, followed by Isaac Tupper and Matt Murad both crossing the finish line in 17:16. Jack Healy was ninth in 17:24, ahead of ESM’s Nick Schug (17:37) in 10th place.
Both ESM and J-D swept Cortland and Chittenango, so the Spartans emerged with a 3-0 mark for the meet and the Rams had a 2-1 mark. J-D had equal 15-46 wins over the Purple Tigers and Bears as ESM had 15-48 wins over those same two schools.
In the girls race, it proved as close as possible, but J-D edged past ESM 28-29, though as in the boys race the Rams and Spartans both had easy wins over Chittenango and Cortland.
J-D’s Rachel Fairbanks won among individuals in a time of 19:01, a mere 10 seconds ahead of ESM’s Gabby Pallotta. Far behind them, the Rams’ Emilee Carpenter was third (19:54), with Morgan Young giving the Spartans a fifth-place clocking of 20:35.
Running close to each other, J-D’s Laura Wengert was seventh (20:58) and Samantha Clemons was ninth (21:00), with ESM’s Brittany Kubecka (20:59) and Cindy Brownson 10th in 21:02. It took Katie Pinkes finishing in 21:30, three spots behind ESM’s fifth runner, to help J-D hang on by that single point.
In its OHSL Liberty division opener, Christian Brothers Academy’s boys team went to Cazenovia and beat the Lakers 26-31, but lost to Hannibal 23-36.
Brendan Smith dominated the individual race, winning in 16:03, more than a minute ahead of the field. David Carey was fourth, in 17:52, but Hannibal had more depth, claming five of the top seven spots ahead of Sid Perkins, who was 10th in 18:56.
The CBA girls, meanwhile, also split with Hannibal and Cazenovia, beating the Warriors 15-40 but falling to the Lakers 23-36.
Megan Pierce won the individual race in 20 minutes flat, with Maire Kate McGlynn fourth in 20:43. Cazenovia, though, had six of the top eight finishers before Alexis Buck finished ninth (21:40) and Gabrielle Schug was 10th in 22:28.
During Saturday’s McQuaid Invitational in Rochester, ESM’s Mike Coogan finished 17th in the boys AA race in a time of 16:22, while Coogan was 45th (16:53) and Ferrone was 53rd in 17 minutes flat. J-D’ s Hohreiter led his side, finishing 70th in 17:15.
In the girls AA-2 race at McQuaid, ESM’s Pallotta rose up to ninth place in 19:35, while Young claimed 43rd place in 20:42. J-D’s Fairbanks had a strong showing in the CC sophomore race, claiming third place in 19:16, while Carpenter was seventh in 19:57.
In another CC race, CBA saw Pierce finish 10th in 19:55, two seconds ahead of McGlynn (19:57) in 13th and Buck in 25th place.
