And the beat goes on

Editorial

— This past weekend offered area residents a plethora of opportunities to enjoy live music. In its 10th year, Jazz’N Caz boasted nine live performances at three different venues, over three days. While a unifying theme of this year’s festival was the commemoration of Jimmy van Heusen, a legendary musician with local ties, music enthusiasts without knowledge of Heusen were still able to enjoy the weekend.

Festivities began with the smooth stylings of Colleen Pratt and Friends, last Thursday at the Brae Loch Inn, and concluded with a tribute performance by Gap Mangione and the New Big Band at Catherine Cummings Theatre and a “Jazz After Hours” jam session at the Lincklaen House’s Seven Stone Steps.

In between, residents were treated to stellar performances by the Brubeck Brothers Quartet, Henry Butler, Cazenovia College Singers, as well as the Cazenovia High School Vocal and Jazz Ensembles.

Jazz’N Caz is an event that continually sets Cazenovia apart, year after year. The vibrant culture that our community offers is a characteristic that surrounding towns hope to replicate. With Stone Quarry Hill Art Park just a five-minute drive away from downtown, and venues like the Catherine Cummings Theatre, Brae Loch Inn and the Nelson Odeon regularly hosting musical acts, residents are rarely at a loss for quality entertainment.

The Cazenovia Public Library also does a fantastic job at offering a diverse number of events. Most recently, acclaimed international illusionist Leon Etinne visited, and performed before 120 audience members. The library not only exposes children to art, it effectively enriches them, possibly even influencing a future Van Heusen.

As residents, we should all be incredibly proud of the rich character our community has developed, and be sure to support its growth. Events like Jazz’N Caz not only attracts outside visitors, they establish Cazenovia as a destination, increasing curiosity and ultimately, commerce.

So, here is to the last ten years of Cazenovia’s own jazz and blues festival, and to the next!
