J-E runs to easy win in home opener

Eagles hammer ITC; Ludden holds off Watertown IHC

— Like J-E, Bishop Ludden improved to 2-1, doing so in a home thriller against Class C North power Watertown IHC, the Gaelic Knights edging past the Cavaliers 15-13 to bounce back from last week's loss to Skaneateles.

It was IHC striking first, Mike Marra scoring on a six-yard run. Ludden countered with a big play, Matt Rogers going 67 yards to wide receiver Antoine Montgomery, but a missed conversion left the Gaelic Knights down 7-6.

All through the next two periods, the defenses dominated. Ludden recorded the only points on a safety, and clung to that 8-7 lead deep into the fourth quarter.

In fact, it was that Gaelic Knights defense that provided a cushion late in the fourth quarter when Zack Harding intercepted a pass deep in IHC territory and returned it 10 yards for a TD with two minutes left. Montgomery's PAT made it 15-7.

Immediately, though, the Cavaliers threw a scare into the home fans when Lindsey Pound returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for six points. Down by two, and with time running low, IHC had to go for two and the tie, but Ludden stopped it, recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

So Ludden takes that 2-1 mark into next Saturday's game at Hannibal. Meanwhile, J-E also plays on Saturday, visiting LaFayette/Fabius-Pompey.
