Liverpool resident finds her ‘voice’ after years of domestic abuse

Elaina Leonardo, of Liverpool, and her children escaped domestic abuse at the hands of her ex-husband with the help of the Hiscock Legal Aid Society's Domestic Violence Project.

Elaina Leonardo, of Liverpool, and her children escaped domestic abuse at the hands of her ex-husband with the help of the Hiscock Legal Aid Society's Domestic Violence Project.

— After eight days of trial spanning four months, Judge Hanuszczak awarded Leonardo sole legal and physical custody of her children, with limited regular visitation for her abusive ex-husband. The Court also took the unusual step of requiring the father to get advance written permission from the Court prior to filing any legal proceeding in Family Court concerning custody or parental access.

Leonardo is tremendously grateful for the quality legal representation, respectful treatment, and emotional support she received from Lovejoy-Grinnell and the staff at Hiscock Legal Aid.

The Hiscock Legal Aid Society is the only organization that provides legal representation for victims of domestic violence in Onondaga County.

Since 1999, almost 2,000 individuals have received legal representation through its Domestic Violence Project. They have fled abusive situations, obtained Orders of Protection, received counseling, and secured financial support to keep their families together.

VOICES offers an opportunity for guests to support two organizations that encourage and promote expression. Admission is $125 per person. Reservations are required. For more information please call 474-6064 or visit everson.org.
