Tennis Lakers edged by Marcellus, Homer

Skaneateles sees Herbst, Ellison prevail in singles

— Just before Labor Day weekend, the Skaneateles girls tennis team opened its season, playing close against rival Marcellus before taking a 4-3 defeat to the Mustangs.

Of the three singles matches, the Lakers only got one, as Katelyn Ellison took three sets to beat Colleen Stapleton 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. Makenzie Herbst and Alaina Davis both lost in straight sets.

Moving to doubles, Katharina Kulik and Kathryn Magee dominated Emily Hennigan and Renee Poullott 6-1, 6-1, while Olivia Gage and Angela Krause knocked off Cora Becheteler and Tierney Clark 7-5, 6-3.

Skaneateles nearly got the clinching point in fourth doubles, but in a three-set battle Avery Bird and Julie Hern lost to Marykate McHale and Genevieve Rao 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.

After Wednesday’s match with Cazenovia was rained out, the Lakers were set to face Homer on Friday, only to fall to the Trojans by that exact same 4-3 margin.

Herbst and Ellison took care of their singles matches. In two sets, Herbst beat Michelle Spencer 6-4, 6-1, while Ellison routed Hannah Teter 6-1, 6-1.

For the second match in a row, Kulik and Magee prevailed, though they needed three sets to get past Rachel McNeil and Katie Sinclair 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Bird and Henn fell to Taryn Heath and Samantha Peckham 6-2, 6-3, with Olivia Gage and Angela Kruase losing to Emily Canaski and Molly Gray 6-0, 6-1. Elizabeth Belinski and Emily Call had a 6-0, 6-1 defeat to Carley Dove and Elizabeth Howell.
