Manlius From the Class AA side, the Fayetteville-Manlius football team had to leave the Carrier Dome to find the win column, while Christian Brothers Academy took its turn on Syracuse University's stage and met the same fate as the Hornets did seven days earlier.
With an unstoppable offense that featured plenty of balance between the air and ground games, F-M went to Utica Proctor and roared past the Raiders 56-21. Meanwhile, the Brothers dropped a classic battle to two-time Massachusetts state champion Mansfield 31-26 in the Kickoff Classic.
F-M was part of the first weekend of Kickoff Classic action at the Dome and put up enough points to win a vast majority of football games, only to give up even more in a 62-50 defeat to reigning Section IV champion Corning on Sept. 2.
Seven days later, the Hornets did even better in Utica. Not only did the point total go up, so did the total yardage - a whopping 622, this after dropping 592 yards on Corning. Only this time, it led to an easy win and a 1-0 mark in the Class AA-2 division.
Really, the first quarter decided matters. F-M, on just 21 offensive snaps, erupted for 28 points in that frame, starting with Sean Bright taking off on a 28-yard touchdown run in the game's opening minutes.
After Proctor tied it 7-7 on Maurice Peace's 11-yard scamper, Ryan Greer found the end zone on a 21-yard run to push the Hornets ahead.
Then the passing game took over. Wolfgang Shafer hit on back-to-back long scoring passes to Austin Perez, covering 65 and 38 yards, to extend the margin to 28-7. And Shafer wasn't done, either, getting a third TD pass, this one 22 yards to Sawyer Dew, in the second period in between a pair of Proctor scores.
