Van Buren: Vote Shepard in primary

— On Sept. 13, I urge you to vote for change in representation for those living in the13th Legislative District. Derek Shepard, currently a town councilor in Van Buren, has a proven record of lowering taxes and being responsive to the concerns of his constituents. Derek is the endorsed candidate for the Republican Party and received that designation based on his public service and private business accomplishments.

The party chose this new candidate over the 20-year incumbent who has done little over the years with exception of one tobacco initiative. Mr. Warner also chose to support a new sales tax, which heavily favored the city of Syracuse over his own constituents in Van Buren, Camillus and Elbridge, who saw the highest tax increase in Onondaga County in 2011.

It’s time to tell career politicians like Mr. Warner that we thank you for your service, but it is time to try something different. Please join me in electing a fresh new candidate and vote Derek Shepard on Sept. 13.

Linda DeBottis is a resident of Clay.
