Van Buren: Shepard will cut budget

— Derek Shepard has the experience to understand and represent seniors in a unique way. Derek was previously employed by Park Rose Estates, an assisted living facility, as their executive director. He is also the Van Buren representative for the Canton Woods Senior Center. Derek's ability to understand real world budgets gives him a perspective career politicians don't have. He understands you have to take in more money or spend less and find creative ways to do both. He has seen firsthand the devastating effects higher property taxes have on seniors, who, despite paying higher taxes have not received any cost of living increases themselves. While on the town board, he has never taken a pay increase and has been a participant in finding ways to cut the budget, sharing dog control services, merging offices and sharing assessors. The direct result of these actions has been a seven percent tax decrease for Van Buren residents.

Please join me in electing Derek Shepard on Sept. 13 and let him have the opportunity to do the same budget cutting in the County Legislature.

Clotilda McCormick is a resident of Baldwinsville.
