Van Buren: Shepard gets things done

— I am writing in support of Derek Shepard for the office of County Legislator in the 13th District (Van Buren, Elbridge, Camillus).

Derek is a young, accomplished person with an impressive resume: a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University; director of Parkrose Assisted Living facility, a multi-million dollar operation, before the age of 30; Longtime homeowner in Van Buren; Four years on the town board;aAnd now a third year law student at S.U. with an almost perfect GPA.

Derek is very determined in his approach to his own life choices as well as his public responsibilities. He is a self-starter and has demonstrated time and again the ability to get out in front of an issue before it's a problem. Whether a purely budgetary matter or knotty personnel issue, Derek has helped save thousands of taxpayer dollars by limiting future costs.

This is a period in our country's history where we are faced with hard choices on many fronts, defining who we are or want to be, especially at the local level. Change is necessary to accommodate these events, but it should be directed wisely, not be feared. I have noticed in my own experience that there are three types of people who aspire to elected office: those who have friends in politics; those who want to "be somebody;” and those who want to get thing done. Derek is one of the latter, being entirely his own man. Character counts.

Derek Shepard has served the town of Van Buren well. Now it's time to let him serve the 13th County Legislative District.

Howard C. Tupper is a resident of Baldwinsville.
