Syracuse-area events to commemorate Sept. 11

— The following is a list of events happening in and around the Syracuse area to mark the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Happening before Sept. 11

Mott Road Ceremony

2:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9

Students from Mott Road Elementary teacher Kate Smith’s fourth grade class will begin building an American flag using about 100 rocks that Smith collected about nine years ago from a beach on Lake Ontario.

Formal Commemoration Ceremony

Friday, Sept. 9 at 11:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9

Onondaga Community College, outside the Whitney Applied Technology Center near the white pine trees.

Acts of Kindness Weekend

Friday, Sept. 9 through Sunday, Sept. 11

Positive community outreach projects in commemoration of Sept. 11; facilitated by Women Transcending Boundaries. Visit stb.org for schedule of projects and additional information.

Happening on Sept. 11

Live Art Memorial

8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11

Museum of Science and Technology, 500 Franklin St., Syracuse

City of Syracuse firefighters will recreate an iconic photograph taken of an NYFD firefighter sitting with his head bowed, surrounded by debris.

Memorial Ceremony

9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11

The Town of DeWitt will host a memorial service in front of the 9/11 Memorial monument at DeWitt Town Hall, 5400 Butternut Drive.

Mass

10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11

Le Moyne College

Vincent Hevern, S.J., will preside with special intentions read for those who died.

Interfaith Service of Hope and Remembrance

2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11

Hendricks Chapel, SU

Patriotic Tribute in Song

2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11

The Harmony Katz Men's Chorus will perform at the Dewitt Community Library in Shoppingtown Mall. Larry Brennan, a chorus member and locally known ventriloquist, will also perform.
