J-E Board of Education discusses 2011-12 school year

— The Jordan-Elbridge Board of Education held a special meeting before the new school year. The meeting was held Aug. 25 in the large group instruction room of Ramsdell Middle school.

While some residents of the school district asked questions or voiced further concerns before the school year starts Sept. 1, most of the agenda for the approximately 30-minute meeting included voting on new business and put whatever decisions the board made into effect immediately.

The meeting entailed assigning certain job positions after being agreed upon. The Board of Education, led by President Brian Richardson, voted unanimously for each order of business.

One of the new employees in the district includes Katie Daniels, who fills the position of field director for the marching and field band staff for the schools. Daniels will hold the job for the 2011-2012 season.

“I think this is great,” board member David Gallaro said, in response to Daniels’ new position. “I believe it is the best chance to have continuity of the program.”

Other hires voted in favor by the board include; Christine DeBeradino, a long-term substitute teacher beginning Sept. 1 through June 30, 2012, Heather Torsleff, a elementary teacher, David Ruckdeschel, new coach of Girls Varsity Tennis, Kimberley Stanton, a teaching assistant beginning Sept. 1, Carolyn Sherlock, a elementary teacher and Beverly Grippo, business office consultant as of Aug. 16 through June 30, 2012.

The board also appointed advisors for specific clubs and activities for Ramsdell Middle School. Those include Mark Fretta, the new Ski Club Co-Advisor.

“Labrador Mountain requires two advisors for the ski club,” an employee with the school district said. “Two advisors are necessary so in case one person gets hurt, another advisor can stay with the rest of the group.”

The position covers ski club for both the middle and high schools.
