— Maggie McClain, a third-grader at Van Buren Elementary School, was recently honored by the American Heart Association for her fund raising efforts.

As a participant in the school’s Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser last spring, she collected more than $600 in donations and was the top fund raiser for the school. Her motivation for raising such a large amount was her little brother, who was born with a heart condition that required surgery.

Maggie received a medal and a framed certificate, as well as a new jump rope in recognition of her outstanding achievement.

Kelly Cary is the school information officer for Baldwinsville Central School District.
