When local cross country teams traveled to Jamesville Beach Park for Saturday’s Chittenango Invitational, Marcellus won the boys Varsity 2 race.
The Mustangs finished with 59 points, well clear of Hannibal (101 points) and 16 other challengers on the same venue where the Section III championships will get decided on Nov. 5.
Ryan Manahan added yet another victory to his season-long tear, his time of 16:35.6 more than 15 seconds ahead of Beaver River’s Logan Kempney.
Joe Fallon was sixth, in 17:18.5, while John Bell was eighth in 17:26.9. Justin Garn got to 14th place in 17:53.4, with David Lilly (18:26.5) just ahead of Alex Zamojski (18:29.0) in 30th place.
Jordan-Elbridge settled into sixth place in Varsity Race 1, pushed up there by Steve Slonosky, who got a fifth-place clocking of 17:37.3.
Mitch Alpha ran to 21st place (18:12.5), while Dylan Whittico earned 48th place (19:09.5) and Nathan Hollis was 54th in 19:19.6. Chris Marrero (19:55.3) edged Ben Cheney (19:55.7) at the line.
Solvay was in Varsity Race 3, where Cody McCarthy needed 17:50.3 to slide into ninth place. Matt Cregan was 32nd, in 18:41.1, while Matt Battaglia was 52nd in 19:23.7. Isaiah Lee (20:27.5) and Pete Cifaretta (20:28.8) rounded out the Bearcats’ scoring.
Marcellus, in the girls Varsity 2 race, took second, with 61 points, to Elmira, who won with 41 points.
Despite this, Rachel Garn still won the individual championship, charging to the finish line in 19:53.2, the only girl in the field to finish below the 20-minute mark.
Maggie Dunn worked her way to sixth place, in 20:40.4, with Molly McGuane getting 11th place in 21:05.8. Mary Morocco was in 21st place (21:39.6) and Eliza Bell finished 29th in 22:15 flat.
J-E’s girls were ninth in Varsity Race 1, as Phebe Alley got 26th place in 22:45.2, with Alexis Malvaso claiming 46th place (23:38.0). Natalie Emerick finished in 24:46 flat and Sarah Knapp had a time of 25:05.7.
