Cazenovia Midway through their regular season, the Cazenovia girls cross country team is still undefeated.
Their double victory over rival Skaneateles and Homer on Oct. 5 put them at 4-0, tied for first with the combined Westhill-Bishop Ludden squad.
The “Eastern Lakers,” currently ranked fifth in the state, beat ninth-ranked Skaneateles by a surprisingly wide margin (22-34) to stay atop the powerful OHSL Liberty division. Cazenovia’s depth easily overwhelmed their Homer hosts 22-38.
Despite a first place finish by Skaneateles’ Maddy Adams in a course-record time of 19:11 and a second place finish by Homer’s Jade Auchmoody (19:41), Jeanette Cudney led the Lakers to an impressive victory over two strong oppononents. Cudney’s third-place time of 19:47 was the fifth fastest ever recorded on the Homer course.
As it has been week after week, the Laker pack was the key to their victory as they placed all five scorers over the line in a 50 second span. Megan Stanford had the fastest time of her career, finishing fourth in 20:19, followed closely by Senior Captain Michelle Karker at 20:21. Skaneateles and Homer managed just one more finisher each before Cazenovia clinched the victory with eighth and ninth place finishes by Malone Gabor (20:29, season best) and Margaret Wolsey (20:37, season best).
Senior captain Rae Tobey displaced the fifth Skaneateles runner and the final three Homer scorers from her twelfth place position (21:38). Emma Wolsey (22:09) and Logan Koennecke (22:24) also ran well for the Lakers, as did Evelyn Wells who achieved a career-best time of 22:59.
The Lakers’ win sets up a showdown for the league title with Westhill-Ludden at home on Oct. 12. Led by top-ranked Class B runners Jessica Curry and Betsy Black of Bishop-Ludden, the combined Westhill-Ludden squad is also undefeated.
The Lakers tuned up to defend their league title with a race at the Manhattan Invitational on Oct. 9. Check back next week for full results.
Repeating as OHSL Liberty Champions in 2011 will be a daunting task with five state-ranked teams in the Lakers’ nine team division.
Having beaten both of the other Class C ranked teams (CBA and Skaneateles) Cazenovia will now set its sights on Westhill-Ludden and Marcellus during the final two weeks of the regular season.
