In January of this year, the people of Skaneateles witnessed the passing of a local legend. His name was David Oram, but we all knew him as “Davey”. With his signature long hair and moustache, and his unique sense of style, he endeared himself to many.
Davey was not a large man by any stretch, but in the woods he was larger than life. His love and passion for the outdoors was unrivaled by any of us. He had a great appreciation for the wildlife and the beauty of the forests and swamps around us. Davey was a rascal to be sure, and he sometimes taught us the need for patience, but you had to love him.
On the last weekend of this coming January, it is my intention to launch the first annual Davey Oram Memorial Ice Dishing Derby on Skaneateles Lake. I am pleased to announce that this derby will be held in conjunction with Skaneateles WinterFest 2012 activities spearheaded by Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary Club and with the support of the Chamber of Commerce. These organizations have been very helpful and positive in embracing this event and helping me get this up and running. I am grateful that they have allowed me to join forces in a celebration of winter.
The Davey Oram Memorial Ice Dishing Derby will be the first in a series of fundraising events. Monies raised will go into a fund with the ultimate goal to be the purchase of a piece of land somewhere in the local area. This land will be then be donated to the Finger Lakes Land Trust or the Town of Skaneateles to be preserved as a forever wild conservation area. I am still in the planning stages.
I look forward to the communities’ thoughts, comments, and enthusiasm for this endeavor. Please help in building “Davey’s Forest”. To discuss the Derby or other aspects of the project please feel free to contact me.
