Baldwinsville Many volunteers are needed for Enchanted Beaver Lake, a Halloween family-fun event held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 27 to 30 at Beaver Lake Nature Center.
Beginning Saturday, Oct. 22, and throughout the week following, pumpkin carvers are needed to carve the hundreds of pumpkins used to light up the nature center and trails. On the four nights of the event, 35 volunteers are needed to help with serving hot dogs, popcorn, etc., running kids games and activities and keeping the pumpkins lit. Volunteers need to be age 15 and older and should call Joan Veith at 638-2519 for the times to carve pumpkins and to sign up to help during the event.
Become a mentor
Having a mentor is more important than ever before and that’s because, in many ways, being a kid today is tougher than ever before. Though 30 minutes once a week may seem too short a time, it can be enough to make a child feel special and cared about. Mentoring is seldom about the academics, but more about a positive relationship; that little extra one-on-one attention, which may be missing in a child’s life. When you serve as a mentor to a child, you have an opportunity to enrich your own life as much as you do the life of a child. Mentors working with kids at the elementary level meet once each week for 30 minutes either during lunch time or recess period. Mentors willing to work with sixth-ninth graders are able to meet after school for about 45 minutes. Call the Volunteer Center at 638-0251 for more information.
Thanksgiving dinner donations needed
The Volunteer Center needs your help to continue our long time Thanksgiving tradition of providing complete Thanksgiving dinners to our neighbors in need here in the Baldwinsville community. Many less fortunate families are not able to afford a real Thanksgiving dinner without this help. If you, or perhaps together with your friends, neighbors or co-workers, would like to donate a dinner, please call the Volunteer Center at 638-0251 by Nov. 11.
Nancy Conley is the executive director for the Baldwinsville Volunteer Center. To contact her, or for other volunteer opportunities, visit bvillevolunteers.org or call 638-0251.
