Margaret Wolsey battled the muddy, wet conditions on the Lakers’ rugged Fenner Road home course to help Cazenovia beat league opponents CBA and Hannibal. The Lakers, 2-0, are currently ranked fifth in the state.
Cazenovia The Cazenovia girls varsity cross country team kicked off their OHSL Liberty Division season with a double win over CBA and Hannibal on Sept. 28. The Lakers outran the brothers 23-36 and swept Hannibal 15-50 to start their regular season a perfect 2-0.
Jeanette Cudney led the Lady Lakers, finishing 11 seconds behind race winner Megan Pierce of CBA in 20:11. Senior Captain Michelle Karker had another strong race to place third overall in a speedy 20:33. Mary Kate McGlynn of CBA managed to slip across the line in fourth overall at 20:43 before the Laker pack closed the door on both opponents, finishing fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth to win the meet.
Megan Stanford was third for the Lakers in 20:57 with Malone Gabor just seven seconds back at 21:04. Margaret Wolsey was the fifth for Cazenovia at 21:18 with senior captain Rae Tobey displacing both CBA and Hannibal runners with her sixth place team finish in 21:23.
Two more CBA runners crossed before Logan Koennecke solidified her standing as the Lakers seventh runner with a 22:29 finish, displacing scorers from both opponents. Evelyn Wells had her best race of the season, finishing ahead of all Hannibal runners by nipping their first place finisher by .3 seconds at 23:06.3.
Senior captain Paige Biviano also had her fastest run of the year, finishing the Lakers’ rugged three-mile Fenner Road home course in 24:18.
Cazenovia, currently ranked fifth in New York State Class C standings, easily vanquished tenth-ranked CBA. They will likely face a tougher fight this week when they travel to Homer where they will face the Trojans and the ninth-ranked Skaneateles Lakers. After their second league contest, the Cazenovia Lakers will travel to New York City on Oct. 9 to compete in the huge Manhattan Invitational.
