The Skaneateles Garden Club has been an active club in the Skaneateles community since 1931 but the action isn’t always visible.
Recently, at the Oct. 11 meeting, Helen Glowacki from the Skaneateles Library board of directors, recognized the garden club for planting and maintaining the beautiful flower boxes in front of the library and for the redesign of the landscaping along the front of the building. Helen Nolan accepted the honor on behalf of committee members Susan Hayden, Nancy Easter, Virginia Theurer, Lauri Clark, and Linda Arthur. Helen Glowacki recognized them as “unsung heroes” for their devoted attention to the library.
The Skaneateles Library will honor the Skaneateles Garden Club with a plaque outside the library on Genesse Street.
Also, at the October meeting, the garden club honored P.J. Lemp, who is relocating to Oregon.
P.J. is an honorary member of the Skaneateles Garden Club. She has been a member for 52 years. She is recognized in the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State for her many contributions.
The SGC members are very grateful to P.J. for being the originator of the garden club newsletter “Garden Dirt,” serving as president and holding numerous other offices and chairmanships.
She originated the “Streetscape Awards Program, worked with the village DPW on many tree and landscape projects including the Memorial Park in Clift Park. She researched the club’s history and made a historical document for the members along with chairing many flower shows including “Le Petite et Grande Garden Tour.”
Nancy Easter announced a tree would be planted in the village in honor of P.J.’s many contributions to the club and the community.
SGC up coming programs are Christmas Creations on Nov. 8. Patty Foley will demonstrate over the top and fun arrangement with the use of boxwood, spruce, juniper, and pine.
