At a recent meeting of the Environmental Protection Committee it was announced that Onondaga County has been awarded a grant from the state in the amount of $712,000 for the water re-use project at the War Memorial. Rain water will be captured and used to make the ice at the War Memorial. Legislation is being drafted to address the issues in the suburbs as well. The combined sewer systems extend far beyond the city limits and will need to be addressed in the near future. The "Save the Rain" campaign is an effort to remove 250 million gallons of rain water from the County sewer system. The more we capture, the less we treat, the more we save. Additionally, projects like these will help prevent overflows of sewage into Onondaga Creek and by extension into Onondaga Lake.
Residents all across the county are encouraged to get involved. For more information, check out the "Save the Rain" website at savetherain.us.
