Caz Aggies recognized at state competition

More than 1,200 agriculture students from across New York State attended the NYS Future Farmers of America Convention May 5 to 7 at SUNY Cobleskill. The Cazenovia Aggies FFA Chapter had a very successful trip to the convention as 19 members competed for a number of awards in a variety of career-development events.

The Cazenovia Food Science and Technology team placed first out of 18 teams, and Lindsay Loeper placed fourth individually. After the first day of individual competition, the race was very close between many teams.

During the team competition on the second day, the Cazenovia team had the highest score with the best product development and presentation for the competition. The first place team of Lindsay Loeper, David Ayer, Carly Hazer and Kelly Thorn will represent New York at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis this October.

The two Agricultural Mechanic teams placed second and sixth out of 22 teams. Gerrit Wistrup placed second and Keenan Underriner placed seventh individually in the event out of 86 competitors. All team members had to demonstrate their skills in the areas of welding, small engines, electricity and machinery operation.

During the team portion of the competition, teams demonstrated their skills in problem solving, engineering and math to complete tasks related to tractor computer diagnostics and machinery calibration. The second place team of Gerrit Wistrup, Keenan Underriner, Jeremy Purdy and Cody Westfall will represent New York at the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Massachusetts this coming September.

Other teams who competed from the Cazenovia Aggies FFA Chapter included Parliamentary Procedure, placing fourth; Marketing Plan, placing fifth; and Agricultural Sales, who placed seventh.

The Cazenovia FFA Chapter received a National Chapter Award for their outstanding student, chapter and community development programs. Eight chapters from across the state received the award at convention. The Aggies will help represent New York when they compete for an additional National Chapter Award given out at the National FFA Convention this October.
