At the last spring concert of his career at Skaneateles Central Schools, Angelo Candela, band leader, was serenaded by his band members, the music faculty, some orchestra members and some select ensemble singers. Led by State Street School students Maddie Anna and Benjamin Kringer, the huge group sang a song that was written by Candela 24 years ago.
They adapted his "Goodbye Waterman School Song" with the words "Goodbye Mr. Candela, we'll miss you, miss you! Farewell Mr. Candela, We'll miss you! Miss you!" The tune and the words are known to every student who graduated from Waterman School in the past 24 years, as well as their parents. Students still sing the song during their last concert at Waterman, before heading to State Street School. The song often brings tears to the eyes of those listening, just as it did Wednesday night, for those honoring Candela. Candela started his career at Waterman and later moved to the high school. He retires from the district in June. Other words include "All of the years you've been here, we've learned in so many ways. You have been so patient through the many days ..."
"It's nice to know that it has become a tradition," said Candela He appreciated the evening, including all of the surprises. "The whole night was very touching for me. Tears and hugs from students and parents. I'm not sure how I didn't break down myself."
