Letters: Messages to school district voters

To the editor,

I just want to thank all who supported me at the polls for my run for the Skaneateles school board. I wish our two newest elected board members the very best in their three- year term. I would encourage all members of this community to attend our local school board meetings.

To the editor,

To all of you that took the time to vote in support of the 2011-12 proposed budget, thank you. The board of education, our superintendent, staff and students appreciate the show of support.

There was a record turnout this year due partly to six candidates vying for two open seats and the interest generated in that election. Another factor, and one that has been consistent, is the importance that this town places on student learning and an understanding of how that corresponds to a strong local economy.

Skaneateles was recently acknowledged as having the lowest effective property tax rate in Central New York, as ranked by the Empire Center for New York State Policy. This was a combination of our county, town and school taxes compared to other regions within the state. We understand the pressures of rising tax burdens and make every effort to provide the best educational experience at the lowest cost.

We look forward to a time when the economy is again healthy, when we can plan and implement more strategically to hire dynamic teachers, upgrade our technology, improve our facilities, advance music and the arts and further enrich the academic experience for all of our students.

There are many in this town that have attempted to fill the small gaps with very generous and strategic donations that support our educational mission. Thank you to The Skaneateles Educational Foundation, the Symphony Guild, Skaneateles Splash, the PTC's of each school, the sports and music boosters, and many others.
