At the same time the Jamesville-DeWitt girls track and field teams was laying claim to the OHSL Freedom division championship meet on Thursday at East Syracuse-Minoa, the boys Red Rams were doing the same, though it had more resistance from the hosts.
The Spartans would get 93 points, just behind Mexico (95.5 points) for that runner-up spot. Meanwhile, J-D earned 156 points and roared to the top spot again.
Will Sterriker gave the Rams two titles, as he ran the 110 high hurdles in 16.55 seconds and, in the 400-meter hurdles, edged Chittenango’s Kris Ingerson, 59.56 seconds to 59.77. In the 3,200-meter run, J-D went 1-2 as Will Hohreiter won in 10:16.80 and Dan Driscoll (10:33.02) was second. ESM’s Louis Ferrone was fifth.
ESM’s Mike Coogan also won twice. He proved too strong in the mile, earning a time of 4:34.04 that beat Mexico’s James Gowans by 1.35 seconds, and won a tight 800-meter run over J-D’s Austin Davis, 2:04.98 to 2:05.44. He also was third in the 3,000-steeplechase.
Another J-D title came when Nick Harron won that steeplechase in 11:22.50, beating ESM’s Louis Ferrone (11:23.67) as the Rams’ Jack Healy was fourth.
J-D’s Eric Nuss was third (1:02.05) in the 400 hurdles in addition to his fourth in the 110 hurdles, where ESM’s Mike Terry (17.14 seconds) landed in third place. Nuss and Sterriker helped Navale Taylor and Zach Liebmann get to second in the 4×400 relay in 3:40.01. Liebmann would claim fifth in the pole vault.
Taumeras Howard, on his own, was second in the 100-meter dash in 11.76 seconds behind Fowler’s Jamal Reed (11.22), and took fifth in the long jump. But Howard made up for it by joining Taylor, Mike Meyer and Ira Griffin to win the 4×100 relay in 44.55 seconds. Terry, Jayme Patrick, Marc Castro and Tom Grayer got ESM (47.12 seconds) to third place.
In field events, J-D’s Ryan Peters, with a throw of 43 feet 8 3/4 inches, beat ESM’s Camrin Romar (41 feet 4 1/4 inches) in the shot put, but the Spartans’ Jason Purdey paid back when he won the discus with a heave of 117 feet 11 inches as Peters (113 feet 4 inches) slid into fourth place.
Driscoll, Hohreiter, Isaac Tupper and Austin Davis got the Rams to second in the 4×800 relay (8:38.32), while ESM (8:58.38) got fifth place. Driscoll took third and Davis fourth in the mile, where ESM’s Mike Coogan proved too strong,
In the pentathlon, ESM’s Mike Nicholson earned 2,405 points for second place, while J-D’s Nate Sturgeon (2,322 points) was third. Jeff McDuffie cleared 5 feet 6 inches for third place in the high jump.
Meyer, third in the 200-meter dash in 23.84 seconds, also was fourth in the triple jump by going 36 feet 7 3/4 inches. J-D’s Curtis Walker was second in the long jump (19 feet 11 3/4 inches), just ahead of McDuffie (19 feet 11 inches) in third. Walker would go 19 feet 11 inches in the long jump and take third place at Saturday’s Cicero-North Syracuse Invitational.
