CBA lax advances in playoffs; J-D draws top seed

A year after seeing its season end at the expense of Watertown IHC, the Christian Brothers Academy boys lacrosse team got payback.

The Brothers, with the no. 6 seed, relied on a big third quarter to get away from the no. 11 seed Cyclones and prevail 18-10 in Friday night's opening round of the Section III Class C playoffs at Alibrandi Stadium.

CBA had lost to IHC in this exact same round in 2010. Much of the Brothers' squad was back for the sequel and, a season older and wiser, were ready to get some revenge on the Cavaliers.

Through a closely played first half, CBA worked its way in front, eventually taking a 9-6 lead to the break. Whatever was said at halftime seemed to work because, in the third quarter, the Brothers put away IHC with seven unanswered goals.

Cody Radziewicz scored four times, leading a well-balanced attack. Nick Papayanakos backed up his three goals with four assists, while Willie Walker got three goals and two assists and Shane Murphy managed a three-goal hat trick, too.

In support, Max Luthringer and Joey Dalfo both found the net twice, while John Driscoll got one goal and one assist. Mike Vavonese and Collin Smith earned assists.

CBA earned the right to face no. 3 seed Cortland (who eliminated Onondaga 14-5) in Tuesday's Class C quarterfinal - and a win would bring the Brothers home to Alibrandi for a semifinal with Sknaneateles or Westhill before Saturday's title game at Cicero-North Syracuse.

Of course, CBA (11-5) charged down the stretch of the regular season, first with a 16-5 win over Blessed Virgin Mary where 11 different players scored, Radziewicz and Luthringer leading the way with three goals apiece.

Back in league play a night later, the Brothers worked past Jordan-Elbridge 13-9, breaking a close game open by putting up five unanswered goals in the second period. The lead grew to 10-3 by the end of the third quarter before the Eagles made a late charge.
