Local store Epic Outdoor Adventures was honored last Monday with an SBA Small Business Excellence Award at the DoubleTree Hotel in East Syracuse. The U.S. Small Business Administration and the New York Business Development Corporation hosted the 13th annual luncheon to recognize the achievements of local small businesses. The NYS Small Business Development Center at Onondaga Community College nominated Epic Outdoor Adventures for the award.
Although Brian Hill may have started his business in 2010, in many ways, it was the finish line - the result of 15 years of planning and dreaming to create his business adventure. Hill worked extensively in the specialty sporting goods retail industry, learning the trade and planning his dream business. Not only does the store sell a wide variety of bicycles and kayaks, the project has helped to revitalize an aging building in the historic village of Fayetteville.
"Owning my business means I get to never grow up- I own a toy store. It's super fun day-to-day and super tiring. It wouldn't happen without a great team behind me: my wife, Susan, and Joan from the SBDC at Onondaga Community College and many other professionals," said Hill as he accepted the Excellence Award in front of 260 luncheon attendees.
Small businesses are selected for the Excellence Awards based on their company's longevity, innovation, sales growth, increased employment, ability to overcome adversity or community contributions.
