AAA's defensive driving course is a six-hour course approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Upon completion of this course, participants may be eligible to reduce as many as four points from their driving record and will also receive a 10 percent reduction on the collision and liability portion of automobile and motorcycle insurance premiums. Sign up, feel safe and save money. This course will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday June 7 and Thursday June 9 at the old Lysander Park Office on Smokey Hollow Road. This course is open to AAA members and non-members.
Basic canning and freezing
Are you stuck in a rut planning meals? Ever wonder exactly what is in store-bought food? Do you long for a taste from Grandma's kitchen? Home-canning is not a long-lost art. Learn basic techniques for canning and freezing at home with Karen Abbott from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday June 9 in the kitchen at Abbott Farms (first course will cover making jams and jellies). Return home from this hands' on, working demonstration with confidence, recipes, instructions and a jar of product. Class size is limited. If product is too hot to transport, participants may have to return to pick it up.
Basic kayaking course
Learn basic recreational and flat water kayaking from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday June 23 (classroom session) at the old Lysander Park office and from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday June 26 at Mercer Park (water session). This class will offer instruction in proper paddling skills and self-rescue. All students will also learn how to recognize potential safety hazards, how to select, transport, care for and store a kayak. You will also be taught the differences between and advantages/disadvantages of the various makes and models of kayaks and how to use many of the accessories available for safe and enjoyable kayaking. The class will benefit those with no experience and those interested in improving their skills. Must take both the classroom and water session. Kayaks will be provided.
