StepItUP! radio show restructured into two sections

NY GEARUP's StepItUP! radio show has recently been restructured. The show has been divided into two sections; one with a parent focus and the other with a teen focus. On Saturdays from 7 to 8 p.m., the parent focused show will run on Power620 AM. On Sunday evenings between 9 and 10 p.m., the teen focus portion of the show will air on Hot 107.9. We caught up with four of our regular members of the show to talk with them about Step It Up and their experience as seniors:

Dwayne Britt, 17, senior at Nottingham High School.

How'd you get involved with StepItUP?

I got involved with the StepItUP program through NY GEARUP two years ago. I heard about this radio show, so I signed up and ever since then I have enjoyed my time as part of the program every week.

What has your experience been like on the show?

My experience at the radio show has been fantastic. Showcase, Ms. Marissa, Kenny D, and all the other people who help to make this program possible have also helped teach me all of the skills that I need to know, including social and political abilities. I truly owe this fantastic program for giving me such an amazing opportunity to work with so many great people who have motivated and mentored me through the last two years of high school.

What is your favorite part of being a regular on the show?

I love to give advice that I have learned through the years and be able to project my experiences and my knowledge back to the community through this radio show. I'm able to express my individuality and my strength to my community.

Where would you like StepItUP! to go in the future?

Being live instead of pre-recorded. Members on the radio show would be able to really think about the topic on their feet, and allow listeners to be able to call in and voice their opinions. I feel as though that would really strengthen the show.
