Jamesville-DeWitt's boys basketball has successfully begun its pursuit of a fourth consecutive New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A championship.
In the first of two weekend regional rounds Friday night at Cicero-North Syracuse, the Red Rams, relying again on the trio of DaJuan Coleman, Demitrius Mitchell and Tyler Cavanaugh, sailed to an 87-53 victory over Section X representative Massena.
Well-rested, and five days removed from toppling top seed Cortland in the Section III Class A final at Utica Memorial Auditorium, J-D established a fast tempo right from the opening tip, doubling Massena's production as it led 26-13 after one quarter.
To a small degree, Massena played it closer in the second quarter, yet the Rams' margin still expanded to 44-26 by halftime. And when J-D exploded for 28 points in the third quarter, all doubts were erased and coach Bob McKenney could empty his bench.
Coleman fully utilized his 6-10 frame in the middle and finished with 27 points. Yet Massena could not concentrate on him because Mitchell was busy sinking six 3-pointers to account for most of his 20 points, while Cavanaugh twice connected beyond the arc on his way to 15 points. In all, 11 different players got at least one point on this night.
J-D will return to CNS Saturday at 4 p.m. to face Section II champion Mohonasen in the Class A regional final. The winner gets a trip to Glens Falls to play in next weekend's state final four.
