To the editor: Support you local library

On May 17 the Jordan-Elbridge community registered a strong vote of no confidence with the overwhelming defeat of the school budget. Two propositions on that ballot were totally unrelated to the JE school district: increased funding for the Elbridge Free and Jordan Bramley libraries.

Under New York state law libraries are granted authorization to tax patrons in their charter to serve areas. School districts are obligated under New York state law to add library propositions to their school budget ballots and obligated to collect the library tax levy. In addition, since the library proposition is for increased funding only, if a proposition fails the school district is still obligated to collect the last approved levy. Most libraries across Central New York use this method to raise operating funds.

My 2010-11 school tax bill shows a total library tax assessment of $28.87. At this tax rate the 3-percent increase adds another $.86. Consider all the services our two libraries provide our community for less than the price of one tank of gasoline. Show library support and vote yes on June 21.

Thanks from Marcellus Olde Home Days Committee

The Marcellus Olde Home Days Committee, 2011, would like to thank all of those individuals, groups and business who, through their generosity, support and contributions, helped to make the Olde Home Days so successful.

Because the list of volunteers, donors and special help has become so large, the committee would like to convey a universal thank you to all who helped make the event so special. To all those who attended the Olde Home Days, the committee also extends its thanks.

We would also like to extend our thanks to Ned Campbell and the Eagle-Observer for providing some much appreciated publicity prior to the event.

The support of the entire Marcellus community was obvious and reinforces the fact that Marcellus continues to be "A Welcome Home" for all.
