The Cazenovia varsity girls Track and Field team capped their season with a series of impressive performances at the New York State Championship Meet on June 10 and 11, as each of the Laker competitors earned medals at the elite contest.
Paige Biviano led the way for the Lakers with a silver medal performance in the Division II Pentathlon, earning 2851 points to beat out all but one rival among New York State small schools. Biviano combined a series of solid performances in four events with a personal best in the shot to accumulate the prize-winning total over the two-day competition.
She kicked off the meet with a 16.77 second effort in the 100-meter hurdles, earning 623 points. Transitioning to high jump, she cleared 4-10.5, short of her season-best of 5-2, but still good for a strong 610 point total.
Biviano wrapped up the Friday competition with a personal best throw of 30 feet, 4.25 inches in the shot put, worth 480 points. Her 1713 point total placed her second in Division II at the end of day one. She kicked off Saturday in one of her strongest events with a 16-5 effort in the long jump, earning 555 points to expand her lead over the third place athlete.
Wrapping up the grueling five event competition with the 800 meter run, Biviano managed a time of 2:39.47 despite hot, humid conditions. The resulting 579 points was enough to maintain her grip on the silver medal. The competition marked the junior's third trip to the state competition in three years, a streak she will strive to maintain in 2012.
The Lakers' 4x400 relay made it to the medal stand with a series of season-best performances. Entering the meet ranked eleventh in Division II based on their State Qualifier time of 4:09.44, the foursome knew they would have to run the race of their lives to medal - and they did just that.
