Solvay High School's scholarship program nearly doubles

Students in Solvay High School's class of 2011 received more than $105,000 in scholarships during the seventh annual awards ceremony May 25 at the high school. The total amount of scholarship money awarded has grown from $20,800 the first year to $55,000 last year.

This year's total, which is twice as high as last year's, was distributed to 88 seniors.

"During these tough economic times it is truly a statement of support to our students and schools that our community continues to give not only what they have in the past but they continue to provide more," said High School Principal Jay Tinklepaugh.

Scholarships are awarded in the names of more than 65 different organizations, businesses, families and community groups including Solvay Dollars for Scholars.
