Track girls advance to States

A dozen members of Cazenovia's Section III champion girls track and field team competed at the elite State Championship Qualifier on June 2. After dominating the competition, seven of the Lady Lakers are advancing to represent Central New York at the New York State Championship this weekend. Paige Biviano led the Lakers, topping competitors from Divisions I and II to capture the overall Section III Pentathlon title.

After a tumble in the hurdles in last year's state title meet and another hard fall during this year's Section III championship, junior runner Biviano was determined to prevent a repeat at last Thursday's State Qualifier. Her efforts paid off as she navigated all ten hurdles before a stumble at the finish line in a season best time of 16.12 seconds.

Well ahead of all Division II (small school) competitors, Biviano set her sights on overtaking Division I (large school) rival Katie Osborne of C-NS who edged her by .03 seconds in the hurdles. The two remained neck and neck through the high jump, where Biviano cleared five feet to Osborne's 5-2, and the shot put where Biviano threw 28 feet to her rival's 28-9.

Biviano seized the advantage in one of her strongest events, the long jump, where she sailed nearly 16 feet for a six inch advantage, bringing the title to a winner-take-all scenario in the point-rich 800 meter run.

Biviano leveraged a huge 14 second margin of victory in the closing event (2:42 to 2:56) for the overall win as she amassed 2842 points to Osborne's 2736. The Laker star will make her third appearance at the State Meet in three seasons this weekend in her continued quest for a state title.

Fellow pentathlete Raeanne Clabeaux capped off a stellar season for the Lakers with a sixth place Division II finish in the event (1964 points).
