People In Action was recently awarded a garden grant from the Food Bank of Central New York to plant a vegetable garden in Springfield Gardens.
The grant includes $250 worth of seeds, soil, compost, soil testing, and a 4-foot by 8-foot raised cedar bed. Community Food Security Coordinator Robin Neal took soil samples, installed the raised bed and showed members how to plant the garden. The garden was planted on May 26 with the assistance of Neal and PIA members on the north side of the David J. Klim Recreation and Education Center.
Members and families will provide periodic maintenance and harvesting. Food grown will be served in the People In Action programs and excess food will go to the Food Pantry in Springfield Gardens.
