West Genny hockey blanks B'ville in playoff opener

In the other half of the sectional Division I bracket, Solvay, the no. 7 seed, was seeing its season come to an end at the expense of RFA, the no. 2 seed, who rode a Max Bartell hat trick to a 5-2 win over the Bearcats.

It didn't take long for the Bearcats to get into trouble, as Bartell and Nic Tardugno both put shots past Solvay goalie Ryan Bonk to make it 2-0 before the game was five minutes old.

Then it went quiet for a while, Solvay unable to find its way past a tight Black Knights defense as, late in the second period, T.J. Reilley added a goal that made it 3-0. Capping off his big night, Bartell got his second and third goals in the final period, expanding the Bearcats' deficit to 5-0.

Fighting to the end, Solvay finally got on the board when David Graf found the net with 3:23 to play, and Graf converted again in the waning seconds. Casey McHale and Dan Scanlon earned assists as Bonk finished with 30 saves. Solvay closed the season with a record of 9-7-4.
