Former teacher's assistant charged with having sexual relations with student

A teacher's assistant, formerly employed by OCM BOCES, has been charged with having a sexual relationship with a student.

Christen L. Hayes, 30, of 164 Castle Creek Road in Binghamton, was charged Jan. 27 with three counts of rape in the third degree, three counts of criminal sexual act in the third degree, three counts of sexual abuse in the third degree, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of unlawfully dealing with a child in the first degree after sheriff's detectives investigated allegations accusing Hayes of engaging in inappropriate activity with a student.

Detectives began investigating Hayes in October 2010, after being contacted by the Onondaga County District Attorneys Office who first learned of the allegations. As a result of the investigation, detectives learned that in 2009 Hayes had established a relationship with a student who was under the age of 17 at the time. Hayes is also accused of engaging in sexual activity with the student on several occasions during the months of June of 2009 and February 2010.

Hayes was arraigned in the DeWitt Town Court where bail was set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond. Hayes was taken to the Onondaga County Justice Center where she posted bail.
