Library Focus: AARP tax help available at library

By Valerie Chism

It's Love Your Library Month and we have lots of reasons for you to do just that from great new titles in a variety of formats to tax help and useful classes to make your life easier and more productive.

AARP tax help

Our friends from the AARP are back to help seniors and low -income residents with their taxes. Call the library at 635-5631 to set up an appointment.

Heritage hunt

Ancestry Library is a great tool, but for those days you don't want to shovel before you dig Genealogist Louise Creighton will offer hands-on instruction on the HeritageQuest database at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 9 in the Community Room. Unlike Ancestry Library, which is available only through subscription or on the library's in-house computers, this handy genealogical tool can be accessed at home using your library card and a pin number.

Get wired

Even librarians struggle to keep up with new technology, but we're here every Wednesday to help you with the basics. Wired Wednesday classes are held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Class size is limited and registration is required. Classes for the rest of the month include: Searching the Web Feb. 9; Privacy and Safety Online Feb. 16; and Ebooks Feb. 23. Call 635-5631 to sign up.

More specialized classes are also available for more advanced students at 1:30 p.m. Fridays. This month's offerings include: Finding Reliable Health Info Online Feb. 11; Buying and selling on eBay Feb. 18; and Local History Online Feb. 25.

Help for the hunt

At 1 p.m. Thursdays, the library hosts two alternating programs: Jobseekers Lifeline classes designed to help you refine your skills and target opportunities, and Job Club, a chance to share leads and support. On Feb. 10, our guest speaker will talk about jobs in local and state government and what it takes to Break into Civil Service. Job Club meets Feb. 17 for sharing and support and the following week, on Feb. 24, our speaker will help you untangle the mysteries of unemployment compensation with a special Q and A session.
